I’m watching Buffy for the very first time despite my advanced years, and I’ve been taking notes because why not. Presenting s02e07, “Lie to Me.”

Oh jesus, Drusilla does not stop being creepy, ever. I wonder if Juliet Landau got typecast for this ever afterward.
We haven’t heard much from Giles about his burgeoning relationship; good to see it’s all right. (Go Giles)
I am unashamedly Team Giles. I don’t even know if that’s a thing, I just made it up. Team Giles, motherfuckers
“Buffy and Angel have serious communication problems” is not a theme I want to see a whole lot of, just FYI.
This supergoth club is hilarious; what the hell is going on?
The scene with Willow and Angel forces me to reluctantly admit that Angel has interesting dynamics with just about everybody on this show (Xander, Cordelia, Giles, Willow) except Buffy, but maybe their relationship story just bores me because it’s so standard.
Hahahaha at the visual joke with Angel’s scorn at the vampire posers!
This episode is extra good if you read that Preacher one-shot where Cassidy visits New Orleans for the first time.
This is an unusually grim ending, isn’t it? Not that there’s anything wrong with that.

Having never watched Buffy, I’m doing so now with my girlfriend, and I have thoughts. Here are my reactions to s02e06, “Halloween.”

Most of the vampires Buffy’s fought up to now don’t seem to know what they’re doing; this guy’s got moves.
Why exactly does Buffy listen to any damn thing Cordelia has to say?
Also, why does Buffy care what Angel thinks she looks like? Isn’t it abundantly obvious to her that Angel’s all about her already?
Xander being worried about the rest of the school perceiving him as a coward is ill-conceived at best for many reasons.
“When it comes to dating, I’m the Slayer.” Cordelia, you are growing on me.
Hand it to Spike, people: watching video footage of how Buffy fights is the smartest thing I’ve ever seen a vampire do up to now.
Seriously, Drusilla is the creepiest creep who ever creeped.
That’s two (2) “Who is that girl?” moments from Oz upon seeing Willow, now. Speaking of which, I know Willow’s reluctance to take part in Sexy Girl Halloween is an interesting statement on gender roles and Halloween costumery, but her outfit really is smokin’.
Everybody’s costumenesia is hilarious; I like how Cordelia and Angel more or less handle it.
I just knew Giles had to be a secret badass with a dark past!

Thoughts on Buffy from a man who’s never seen it until now, watching it with his fantastic girlfriend. Today, s02e05, “Reptile Boy.” I did three at once yesterday, but from now on I think I’m going to keep ‘em to one episode per post, because it turns out I have a lot to say sometimes.

I assume this is an actual Bollywood movie they’re watching, but did they get the plot summary right?
The literal second thing in my notes for this episode: “Frat cult?”
This frat guy’s a senior in college and he’s hitting on high school girls? Really? No red flags?
White Privilege: The Frat.
I know I’ve said this before, but Giles could really stand to subcontract the “training” part of his Watcher duties.
Is “Watcher” capitalized? It sounds like it should be. I should probably be capitalizing “Slayer.” Noted.
Oh, thank fuck Angel knows the age difference between Buffy and himself is creepy and weird!
Hey, this frat cult accepts black dudes. Way to be open-minded, frat cult!
Given that he trains Buffy, who is the Slayer, shouldn’t Giles be able to hold his own in hand-to-hand combat despite being a man on the far side of spry?
Xander’s frat boy disguise is hilarious.
This entire episode is one big cautionary tale, isn’t it?
Once again, the Slayer’s lack of poison resistance despite her other superpowers becomes a crucial plot element.
Willow’s rant is gold. Gold!
How does worshiping a giant snake man from the bowels of the earth cause this frat’s members to become wealthy? Does the giant snake man have probability-altering powers? Not much help at the end there, huh.

Mark Drew is old school in Sydney’s lowbrow art scene; a co-founder of China Heights gallery, an self-trained artist and graphic designer, and a lover of ‘90s hip hop. This show brings together childhood obsessions into a zine and a set of large-scale canvases that mash up the Peanuts cartoon strip with his favourite lyrical cuts.

The works show Peanuts comics with lyrics from Nas, Wu-Tang Clan, N.W.A, Gang Starr, Public Enemy and more, as dialogue. The combination replicates the obsessions of a younger Mark Drew perfectly, as well as encouraging a possible anima connection within the spirit of the subjects.

Observations on Buffy from a man watching it for the first time thanks to his lovely girlfriend. I’ve actually got a backlog here, so let’s do three episodes at once.

s02e02, “Some Assembly Required”

Yes, Giles, yes — actually, I’m glad Miss Callender(sp?) is taking the lead on this whole relationship thing.
This creeper with the camera is just the worst. I think his stupid chin-fuzz beard is making a significant contibution, though.
My notes just say “Cordelia + Angel,” which I take to mean they have an interesting dynamic together.
Buffy should’ve taken that camera creeper’s head off with that kick; she must be pulling her punches with baseline humans.
That’s two (2) missed opportunities for Xander and Willow to make kisses!
Question: is Buffy the first slayer Angel’s met? Dude’s over 240 years old, after all.

s02e0, “School Hard”

Armin Shimerman is never not the best.
Interesting to note that vampires can be affected by drugs in the blood of their victims; do they also fall prey to blood-borne illnesses? Probably not, right?
Not only is Drusilla the creepiest, what is everyone else in the room thinking while she and Spike make out and murmur to each other like total weirdos?
Buffy, I thought you just had a stake on you at all times. Didn’t you learn this in season 1?
I wonder how the rest of Buffy’s friends sold “weapons prep time in the library” to Cordelia, who probably had something else in mind for her day. Way to be a good sport, Cordelia.
I’m sort of hoping Spike’s apparent real name of “William the Bloody” comes back at some point this season.
How much of this in-school action did Buffy’s mom actually witness? Will she ever say?
Hold up — does the principal (and the cop, for that matter) actually know what’s really going on?
Spike straight up killing the Anointed, about whom such a big deal was made in the past, is a good way to say “yes, this guy is the new villain now, thanks.”

s02e04, “Inca Mummy Girl”

Xander, you cannot bullshit us: you have definitely thought about Willow’s lips by now.
I don’t know if it’s comforting or despair-inducing that Xander is also terrible with foreign women.
This episode is making a lot of … leaps for the sake of expedient storytelling, isn’t it?
My notes say “worst band name” without saying what it was. Way to go, genius.
Willow’s costume is great, though it must be hot. I’m hoping she gets to use that spear before the episode’s over.
Cordelia is so, so reliable in her horribleness, it’s great.

I like Clayton Cubitt’s work, what I’ve seen of it (if he’s who I’m thinking of), but: Why are nerds, misfits, etc. so obsessed with this fantasy that after high school (where they’re uniquely unhappy), there’s this 40-virgins-and-a-mule heaven waiting for them because they’re, like, all shiny? This is a strange, sad thing to believe, and worse, an untrue thing to believe. Have people ever just gone to a comic convention and, like, looked around? A lot of people that didn’t happen for, no? The world is indifferent to most everybody, and the science is not on your side— the science consistently says that kids who are well-adjusted in high school do better later in life. Look it up— that’s the science; if you can be a tall extrovert with an appropriate amount of confidence and hair, that’s scientifically the ideal way to go through life. The science doesn’t want to make those findings— what kind of geeks become scientists, poking and prodding at people like that? Those are weirdos of the finest vintage. Those are the last people happy about their own results. They’re all crying and Hojo the Lab Monkey is looking at them like, “What’s going on with that asshole? I love bananas.”

Yeah, sure, there are a tiny number of nobody people who are nerdy who defeated the odds in the arts world to become faaaaaaamous despite meager beginnings(awesome goal!); and whatever it is that weirdos project onto those guys is actually very lovely. I’d defend that. But to look at any successful geek as Manifest Destiny rather than a crew lucky enough to have found an escape hatch seems… unhealthy. It just all seems so unhealthy. Worse, it seems like sales. And— who do people think PAYS those guys? Who do they think runs those guys’s careers? Have you ever seen a movie executive? Have you ever been around AGENTS? (I don’t recommend it). Do people think that the creative personnel are really running the game and calling shots? That’s not true of nearly every creative enterprise I know, certainly not pre-internet at least. If you’re not a person who can say No in their life, then I don’t care who’s lined up to kiss your ass. Heck, it’s certainly not true now— this generation of nerds is churning out Star Wars movies and Marvel bullshit for corporations that keep nerds like pets. Drive around LA at night— a lot of people on their street enjoying the limited life they have in them in actual 4-dimensional space and … they sure don’t look like they all had a rough time in Algebra or whatever baggage this is all about. They’re not the ones holed up by themselves making their own machines because they can’t connect with people in healthier ways…

It’s just one fantasy after ever since forever. Outer space— you still hear nerds talking about outer space thanks to bad sci-fi; a species that can’t figure out how to sustain their goddamn food source long-term and these folks think science dollars should get poured into Rocketry for journeys into vast expanses of nothingness. Virtual reality. The Singularity— bluh. Bluh! And- and- and, those so-called “elites”? They’re going through their own unique journey that’s no less a human experience than anyone else’s. What kind of art does a person think they’re going to make if they fail to recognize that? Every movie is about the outcast who triumphs over society because everybody feels that way— congratulations, you’re an artist of cliche and no insight.

And say, say, say you’re the special snowflake exception that this guy’s talking about, and you get to live the dream. … That’s it? That’s your dream? Sitting in a VIP area doing coke by yourself surrounded by people you hate because you somehow don’t have the stones to have gotten over the ordinary traumas of a pretty humdrum-sounding adolescence? Yeah, that sounds really awesome, 1975 David Bowie.

I get wanting to have these fantasies. I watch a lot of porn— the things that I think are happening in our nation’s astronomy classrooms… I have a very distorted view of higher education in this country. But expecting some reward for being alienated… the reward is BEING ALIENATED. I mean, have you ever got out of your car while driving around LA at night? Get back in your car and drive! DRIVE! LA’s popular teenagers are embroigled in a twerking scandal right now! Drive and never look back. They can’t catch you cause you’re innocent…
