“While the world knows of the major L.A. gangsta rap figures who helped popularize the raw urban genre two decades ago — Suge Knight, Dr. Dre, Ice Cube — a far less likely figure pushed the music long before most folks knew it existed. If it came straight outta Compton, the birthplace of gangsta rap, often it first went through Wan Joon Kim.”
I had no idea such a connection between...

boybands are weird because they always sing about how this one girl is really hot and special and it just makes me confused and wonder if they’re going to try and share her or just completely gang bang her or what
I don’t know why this has never occurred to me in all the years I’ve known about boy bands. Girl bands, too. For decades now, we’ve been obsessing over...

I have returned from the wilderness
I saw a bunch of shooting stars. There was a rope swing into a lake that I couldn’t quite get the hang of (SEE WHAT I DID THERE). We observed the smoke from a forest fire(?) that later contributed to an amazing sunset.
I really need to wash my car.
This has been an excellent July. I’m ready for a slightly less crazy August, though.

Smell ya later, STINKTOWN
Or:
Once again I find myself leaving the city for the weekend (I haven’t been home for a full weekend all month), this time to go camping up north in the Mendocino National Forest in Lucerne, CA, about 30mi due east of Ukiah. I’m only noting this here in case I get kidnapped by wildlife — if I’m not back by sometime Sunday, send the Army in to retrieve what’s left of...

– Charlotte Shane, “Live Through This.” (via emk-irl)
I can’t advocate this essay enough. Please read it.
(via tweexcore)
I feel vaguely uncomfortable commenting on this as a dude, so I’ll just say that Charlotte Shane is a good writer and this essay is extremely thought-provoking.

The spontaneous generation of wasplife
Last week I somehow got a wasp in my bedroom, which ended up in the window. Not wanting to touch it, I took the advice of a buddy and killed it by blasting it with household cleaner (in this case, a mildew remover with bleach; not fucking around here) at an opportune moment. Today, another one announced itself in my bedroom window. Same treatment. I am a merciless hategod of vespine chemical...

The propagation speed of pop culture
How do you measure how fast something spreads in a culture that has the internet? Can we count it in gifs/second?
I only ask because I want to know how long before I can assume everybody I know saw 21 Jump Street.
And, by extension, how long before I can start telling people to just call me Korean Jesus from now on when they try to lay prolonged tales of woe on me. Because I ain’t got...

Testing the limits of this meatbody
Today I went floating down a placid river with several excellent friends and a lot of snacks and booze. My body is sore from paddling and I’ve got sunburns in unexpected places, but I feel kind of amazing. It’s as though I’ve spent the day testing my body’s capabilities, and have come away armed with important knowledge. That could just be the endorphins talking, but...

A band and their album

Eternal Cosplay Alliance, Miles in the Dark with No One to Guide You
Occasionally my brain spits out a title that I really want to use someday. I don’t have any solid ideas yet, but I detect rhythm and music in those ten words that compel me to do something with them.

What have I done
Back in 2010, I bought some cans of Four Loko right before they changed the formula and stuck them in my fridge. I decided to bring them to San Diego Comic Con, where some (but not all) were consumed. The cooler in which I was keeping them got a little warm on the return trip, so I decided to dispose of the couple that were left by pouring them down an ant hole.
I leave this post here as an...

We've got to live on science alone
Lessons Learned:
Even out in the desert, the galaxy won’t be visible if the moon comes out
On the other hand, if the moon comes out, it’ll be bright enough that you’ll cast a shadow
It is possible to make bocce surprisingly exciting under the right conditions
While the exterior of your car can be cleaned of playa dust relatively easily, the inside of your car will still look...

“The truth is, we never thought we were special. You did. You thought we were special because we were extensions of you. You trained us to be the children you could brag about. Then, all of a sudden, everybody had one and we were no longer good enough, like outdated toys.”
