A New Star Wars Suggested Viewing Order →
roxa: This whole thing is so fucking brilliant and amazing that I almost cried. Holy fuck, you guys. Machete Order actually does the impossible: it makes me want to watch the prequels. Or at least two of ‘em.

Notes from an acoustic open mic that doesn't allow...
When the guy on stage introduces a song called “National Amnesia” as being “inspired by the Howard Zinn book,” you know you’re in for a two-ton barrel of belly laughs.

I have a question about Twitter
I realize this runs the risk of sounding completely self-absorbed, but I hope it’s just the kind of simple curiosity that everyone would have: why does Twitter’s interface become completely useless once you pass a certain number of RTs and/or favorites on a particular tweet? This happens: Twitter: This tweet you’re looking at has 16 favorites and 25 retweets. Me: Oh, cool. Who...

I have opinions.
dilettantepickle: Last night we watched two episodes of Shark Tank, a reality show where entrepreneurs pitch their young businesses to a panel of “sharks” - businesspeople who also started small and are now bazillionaires (like the guy who owns FUBU). It was fascinating.  On the first episode that we watched, there was a set of sisters who pitched their business “Tippi Toes” (GAG) which is a...

magnoliapearl: this place is like a forest full of free-expression deer whose population has gone out of control without a healthy balance of cruel but efficient shamewolves Magnolia Porter is at a furry con helping out a friend of hers, although she herself is not a furry. I’m starting to wonder if this ranks as more or less XhardXcoreX than being a non-juggalo who goes to the Gathering...

It's Relationship Question Friday?
This one will be quick. I’m just wondering how your relationship got started. Was it: The low-heat one where you both kind of discover each other, one asks the other out, and it’s all good The Hollywood version where one of you has to seriously court the other (who’s not about it for some reason) and woo them into going out on a date and then it starts from there I’ve...

We're getting closer to vat-grown meat, you guys →
I know I’m in the crazy minority here, but I’m excited for this. Gimme my algae-fed vat-grown clone beef right now. I’ll call it “future steak,” though I bet Tom Haverford would have a better name for it.

Plant blooms after 30,000 years in permafrost →
infoneer-pulse: A plant that last flowered when woolly mammoths roamed the plains is back in bloom. Biologists have resurrected a 30,000-year-old plant, cultivating it from fruit tissue recovered from frozen sediment in Siberia. The plant is by far the oldest to be brought back from the dead: the previous record holder was a sacred lotus, dating back about 1200 years. » via New Scientist ...

This one I'm giving away for free
weakmeatstrongeat: I’m having a really hard time coping with the fact that at least 25% of the people who walk into my work are a bunch of idiots from Moronville on planet Stupid in the I Don’t Know How To Act In Public galaxy. Why would anyone think it’s acceptable to take the only container of sugar from the communal sugar and cream area to their table and keep it there?! As if they need to...

Tribal knowledge: buying cucumbers
It turns out there’s no way to accurately tell whether the cucumber you’re buying is going to be bitter, but the produce guy did give me an unrelated tip: stick to the skinnier ones. The interior volume of a fatter cucumber is likely to be mostly seeds. And now you know what I know.

I had to do it
The Mass Effect 3 multiplayer demo lets you purchase packs of random weapons, upgrades, and characters to try out. One of mine, a Vanguard (which I still think is the best class), turned out to be a Drell, who I promptly named “Archie” because of a Simpsons joke that I’m not sure anyone else would get. I had to point that out here because I couldn’t live with it in the...

It's gonna get real in here for a second
Have you ever paused for a moment to consider how weird it is that “winter dryness” is a thing that exists? Why should our skin get drier and itchier in the winter? Can axial tilt really produce that sharp a change in overall humidity? It’s not like the bodies of water near my house go anywhere. It’s actually rainier in the winter, even. Fuck, that’s weird. I’m...

Lisa Hanawalt's illustrated review of The Vow →
I want to make out with whatever part of Lisa Hanawalt’s mind is responsible for everything she creates. There, I said it. Sorry if I made it weird between us, Lisa Hanawalt’s mind.

This is pretty damn great, everybody. 10:1 somebody’s going to use the kid in the grocery store as an avatar before the day’s over, though.
